THEBES, Ill. -- Howard Wiley Clutts, 90, died Wednesday, March 17, 1999, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau.
He was born Sept. 27, 1908, in Thebes, the son of Vernell and Clara Murphy Clutts. He was first married to Stella Adams, who preceded him in death. He married Gladys Waddell July 4, 1976, in Thebes. She died Jan. 9, 1993.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Thebes. He had worked as an engineer in the barge industry on the Mississippi River, living in Cape Girardeau at the time. He later moved to Poplar Bluff, where he became the superintendent of the Rural Electric Coop power plant. He moved back to Thebes after retiring at age 65.
Survivors include a daughter, Stella Allen of Wappapello; a stepson, Richard Waddell; a brother, Richard Clutts of Thebes; two sisters, Vertis Hemmings of Pittsburgh, Penn., and Jennie Taylor of Springhill, Fla; a grandchild and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
Visitation will be from 9:30-11 a.m. Friday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Chapel.
Funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday with the Rev. Carl Fisher officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Thebes.
