Howard Taft Douglas, 82, of Scott City died Friday, April 28, 2023, at his home.
Born April 1, 1941, in East Prairie, Missouri, to Amos Ray Douglas and Mable Marie Hedges Douglas, he grew up in East Prairie, and after high school entered the National Guard, where he served in various places for over six years.
Howard and his wife, Betty, lived in various places in Southeast Missouri but settled in Scott City over 50 years ago. A well-known dry cleaner, he was employed at Courtesy Cleaners in Cape Girardeau for 50 years until ill health forced his retirement. Howard was a true and humble gentleman, always well dressed and loved to square dance. He attended New Beginnings Church in Miner, Missouri, and later Christian Mission Church in Benton, Missouri.
On June 13, 1959, he married Betty Louise Faire, who survives of the home.
Also surviving are his daughter, Judith Ann Douglas of Scott City; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; his brother, Richard (Debbie) Douglas of South Roxanna, Illinois; also, a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Michael Eugene Douglas; his brothers, Bill, Porter, Jeff and Harlan (Toby) Douglas; and his sisters, Margie Ann Mayabb, Louise Douglas and Margaret Douglas Stone.
Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, at McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston, Missouri, where funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 3. Tommy Smotherman and Teresa Williams will officiate. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery near Charleston, with military honors.
