MURPHYSBORO, Ill. -- Helena Holmes, 91, of Murphysboro and formerly of Cairo, Ill., died Friday, Feb. 1, 2008, at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro.
She was born Feb. 15, 1916, in Griffin, Ind., daughter of Charles and Martha Calvin Upshaw. She and Hezzie Holmes were married, and he died in 1985.
Holmes was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church of Cairo and was a postmaster.
Survivors include three daughters, Carolyn Jones of Murphysboro, Janet Compton of La Grange, Ky., Gloria Highers of Fort Gibson, Okla.; a brother, Howard Upshaw of Cairo; a sister, Mary Jones of Cairo; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Barkett Funeral Home in Cairo.
Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Tom Hoskins officiating. Burial will be in Green Lawn Memorial Gardens in Villa Ridge, Ill.
