Helen Bernice Hilgendorf, 88, of Cape Girardeau died peacefully Monday, Nov. 5, 2018, at her home. She was born March 6, 1930, in Charleston, Missouri, to James F. and Hazel M. Layne Badgett. She and Merle Hilgendorf were married Oct. 16, 1948, at Geneseo, Illinois. He preceded her in death Jan. 5, 2006...

Helen Bernice Hilgendorf, 88, of Cape Girardeau died peacefully Monday, Nov. 5, 2018, at her home.

She was born March 6, 1930, in Charleston, Missouri, to James F. and Hazel M. Layne Badgett. She and Merle Hilgendorf were married Oct. 16, 1948, at Geneseo, Illinois. He preceded her in death Jan. 5, 2006.

She was a reading specialist from 1973 to 1985. She was generous in her support for Lutheran Family and Children's Services. She enjoyed coordinating the library at Saxony Village for several years. Helen and her husband loved to travel abroad, and she easily made friendships that lasted a lifetime.

She was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Chapel.

Survivors include many nieces and a nephew.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Carolyn Moore; and nephew, Pastor C. William Weis.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Chapel in Cape Girardeau.

Funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. Weston Wildauer officiating. Entombment will be at Cape County Memorial Park Mausoleum in Cape Girardeau.

Memorial contributions may be given to Good Shepherd Lutheran Chapel, Lutheran Family and Children's Services, and Southeast Missouri University Foundation.
