Harold L. Simmons, 84, of Cape Girardeau passed away Monday, July 23, 2012, at his home.

He was born June 10, 1928, in Cape Girardeau, son of Roscoe and Lela Barger Simmons. He and Louise Betts were married May 8, 1952, in Hot Springs, Ark.

Harold was a sergeant in the U.S. Army, serving honorably from 1946 to 1952. In addition to receiving a Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal, he received Occupational Medals for his service in both Germany and Japan during World War II, and a Korean Service Medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars for his service in Korea.

He worked for the former Midwest Dairy 16 years, Pepsi Cola 15 years, Drury Construction Co. five years, and then worked for Commercial Mailing Service, all in Cape Girardeau, retiring in 2009.

Loving survivors include his wife of 60 years; four children, Barbara (John) Siscel of St. Louis, Sandra Simmons of Cape Girardeau, Kenneth (Carol) Simmons of Jackson, Nancy Simmons of Cape Girardeau; six grandchildren, John Siscel, Clint and Kyle Simmons, Brook, Brandon and Blake Smith; two great-grandchildren, Ashley Simmons and Owen Bundy.

He was preceded in death by a daughter and a brother.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at McCombs Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, with Maj. Benjamin Stillwell of the Salvation Army officiating. Interment will be in Fairmount Cemetery with full military honors.

The family suggests that memorials be made to Disabled American Veterans.
