Gordon Smith

PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- Gordon R. Smith, 92, of Perryville died Wednesday, March 21, 2018, at his home.

He was born Sept. 21, 1925, in Seneca, Wisconsin, son of Vincent J. and Fern Childs Smith. He married Eunice Callaway. She preceded him in death. He then married Jane Ellzey Abernathy Smith. She also preceded him in death.

Gordon was retired from the U.S. Navy after 25 years. He was owner/operator of Smith Refrigeration in Cape Girardeau.

He was baptized in the Catholic faith.

Survivors include two sons and a daughter, Craig (Marion) Smith of Milwaukee, Marcia Abernathy of Cape Girardeau and Brian (Sharon) Smith of Little Rock, Arkansas; a sister, Valois Bingham of Eulis, Texas; stepchildren, Thomas (Kristine) Abernathy of Old Appleton, Christopher (Katherine) Abernathy of Providence, Rhode Island, and Sarah (Jerome) Pinkner of St. Louis; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, both wives and four brothers.

A private service will be held at a later date for the family.

Young and Sons Funeral Home in Perryville provided the arrangements.
