Funeral Mass for George Nicholes Schafer, 3758 State Highway 74, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Cathedral. The Rev. Randy Tochtrop will officiate, with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Friends may call at Lorberg Memorial Funeral Chapel after 5 p.m. today.

Schafer, 85, died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 1997, at his home.

He was born July 4, 1912, at Kelso, son of Frank G. and Ortha Louise Heisserer Schafer. He married Clara Maria Miller. She preceded him in death.

Schafer was a farmer, and also worked 12 years at Marquette Cement Co. He was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral, and Farm Bureau.

Survivors include four sons, Edward Schafer of Scott City, William and Robert Schafer of Cape Girardeau, Thomas Schafer of Poplar Bluff; two brothers, Zeno Schafer of Jackson, Frank Schafer of Shelbyville, Ill.; five sisters, Celesa Younger, Emma Marx, Lee Jones, Marilyn Vaughn, all of St. Louis, Marie Hartwig of Cape Girardeau; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, two brothers, and two sisters.
