George M. "Smiley" Sweet, 79, of 2525 Boutin Road in Cape Girardeau died Saturday, Dec. 28, 1991, at Cape LaCroix.
He was born Aug. 6, 1912, in East Prairie, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Sweet. On Jan. 27, 1945, he married Ruby Keller at Cape Girardeau. She preceded him in death May 14, 1984.
For more than 20 years, he was a tow-boat deck hand with Corgill Carriers of Ste. Genevieve. He also was a member of the National Maritime Union, and of the Catholic denomination.
Survivors include two sons, James Hadley of Jackson and Bob Hadley of Cape Girardeau; three daughters, Helen Morton of Scott City, Wanda Gibbar of Scott City and Norma Jean Stidham of Chaffee; a brother, William Sweet of Cape Girardeau; two sisters, Flora Mae Freeman of Malden and Brenda Morris of Stone Fort, Ill.; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and four great, great-grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by a son, a daughter and a brother.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. today at the Ford and Sons Mt. Auburn Chapel in Cape Girardeau, where funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Charles Seabaugh will officiate, and burial will be in Lorimier Cemetery in Cape Girardeau.
