George W. Hilpert, 90, of Palmyra and formerly of Cape Girardeau died Monday, Dec. 27, 1999, at the Luther Manor Nursing Home in Palmyra. He was born Dec. 29, 1908, at Ilmo, son of George D. and Lydia Zschoche Hilpert. He and Mary Louise Hitt were married June 1, 1941, at Gordonville. She died Feb. 9, 1987...

George W. Hilpert, 90, of Palmyra and formerly of Cape Girardeau died Monday, Dec. 27, 1999, at the Luther Manor Nursing Home in Palmyra.

He was born Dec. 29, 1908, at Ilmo, son of George D. and Lydia Zschoche Hilpert. He and Mary Louise Hitt were married June 1, 1941, at Gordonville. She died Feb. 9, 1987.

He received his bachelor's degree from Southwest Missouri State University at Springfield and his master's degree from the University of Missouri at Columbia. A longtime educator in Southeast Missouri, he began his teaching career at Gordonville High School, served as superintendent of schools at both Perkins and Benton and retired as a junior high teacher from the Chaffee district.

He was also a businessman and owned and operated Hilpert's Store and Bottled Gas at Gordonville. He served on the Riverside Regional Library Board for many years and served as president of the board at the time of its beginning. He was an active member of the Christ Lutheran Church at Gordonville and later became a member and adult Bible class leader at the Zion Lutheran Church at Palmyra.

Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Schreiner of Palmyra; a sister; Frieda M. Koerber of Cape Girarev. David Johnson will officiate, with burial to follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
