George E. Hartle, 91, of Jackson died Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.
He was born May 4, 1914, in Scopus, Mo. son of John and Bertha Schrock Hartle. He married Irene Hahs April 25, 1934, in Jackson. She passed away Jan. 16, 2002.
George and Irene were former residents of Oak Ridge (1934 to 1951), where George once served as mayor; Perryville (1951 to 1964); and Cape Girardeau (1964 to 2000). They moved to Jackson in 2000.
George was a farmer in the Oak Ridge area during his early years. He then worked as a truck driver for the U.S. Postal Service many years, and later was an over-the-road trucker for Valley Steel and Ryder. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau.
Survivors include four sons and three daughters-in-law, John and Beverly Hartle of Richland, N.C., Joe and Margie Hartle of Sebring, Fla., Roy and Selena Hartle of Scott City, Wade Hartle of Jackson; two daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Willie Abernathy of Perryville, Mo., Joy and Bill Friedrich of Jackson.
Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, Connie Starr, Denita Hartle, Robin Reed, Sheri Courtney, Dean Hartle, Dana Taveniere, Jeremy Hartle, Roy Hartle Jr., Greg Hartle, Chris Friedrich, Shea Friedrich; and 15 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Susan Ann Abernathy and John David Hartle II; two brothers, Oscar Hartle and Amon Hartle; four sisters, Laura Bollinger, Carrie Blechle, Clara Cook and Lunda Propst.
Mr. Hartle desired to aid medical science by donating his body.
The family will receive friends Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson.
A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Rocky Tallent officiating.
