CHARLESTON -- E.W. "Gene" McConachie, 88, of Charleston died Wednesday, May 10, 2000, at his home.
He was born Oct. 24, 1911, in Chaffee, son of Lindsday S. and Hattie Luckman McConachie. He and Betty Sue Elmore were married Sept. 22, 1940. She died June 10, 1994.
McConachie lived in Mississippi County most of his life. In September 1940 he and Ellis Young, a brother-in-law, opened Young's Cleaners and Clothiers. He later purchased Young's interest and operated the business until retiring in March 1986.
He was a member of Charleston VFW Post 4294.
McConachie was a platoon sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in the European Theater. He received four battle stars and was awarded the Silver Star of Valor.
Survivors include a son, Lindsay McConachie of Columbia; a daughter, Claudia Arington of Dogwood; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at IOOF Cemetery, with the Rev. Rick White officiating.
