Garnett R. Sanders, 78, of Cape Girardeau died Monday, March 18, 2002, at Berea Hospital in Berea, Ky.
He was born Jan. 6, 1924, at Commerce, Mo., son of Jesse Richman and Alice Loftin Sanders. He and June E. Cotner were married March 18, 1944, at Scott City, Mo.
Sanders had lived in the Cape Girardeau and Jackson, Mo., areas since 1953. He was employed 28 years at the Cape Girardeau Post Office, retiring as a postal clerk. He was a member of Lynwood Baptist Church.
He served in the U.S. Army from May 2, 1944, to April 13, 1946. He participated in the battles of Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He was awarded the Distinguished Unit Badge, two overseas bars, European, African, Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and Purple Heart.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, William Sanders of St. Charles, Mo., Thomas Wayne Sanders of Houston, Texas; a daughter, Marilyn Johnson of Arnold, Mo.; three sisters, Irene Hente, Alice Julian and Jane Thompson, all of Cape Girardeau; a brother, Reece Sanders of Cape Girardeau; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and three sisters.
Friends may call at Ford and Sons Mt. Auburn Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. today.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with Dr. Derek Staples officiating. Burial will be in Cape County Memorial Park.
