SIKESTON, Mo. -- Garland C. Burchfield, 81, of Sikeston died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, at Miner Nursing Center in Sikeston.

He was born March 8, 1920, in Wooster, Ark., the son of John Lee and Mary Edna Wofford Burchfield. He married Jeanne E. Maxwell on Feb. 12, 1983, in Sikeston. She survives.

He was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Alabama.

He worked for 27 years for McDonell Douglas Aircraft Corp. in St. Louis, retiring in 1978. He also worked in the "clean room" for NASA's Mercury and Gemini space flights.

He also is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Sue Adkins of Kansas City, Mo., and Barbara Cahoon of Sikeston; five brothers, Wendell Burchfield of Newport Richey, Fla., Rudy Burchfield of Barnhart, Mo., Hartsel Burchfield of Lenexa, Kan., Harold Burchfield of Corpus Christi, Texas, and James Burchfield of Sikeston; four sisters, Maxine Sweat of San Francisco, Calif.; Faye Cunningham of Wellington, Fla., Wanda Dye of Blytheville, Ark., and Pat Oswald of Bragg City, Mo.; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today at Nunnery Funeral Chapel.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the chapel, with the Rev. Rick Lasley officiating.

Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.
