Fred Henry Bendel, 87, of Cape Girardeau died Saturday, May 29, 1999, at the Missouri Veterans Home.
He was born Nov. 27, 1911, in Illmo, son of Theodore and Caroline Brenheisen Bendel. He married Bernice Hager. She died in 1956. He later married Agnes Staebel on Feb. 7, 1958, in Cape Girardeau. She survives.
He had served in the U.S. Navy from Oct. 4, 1943, to Nov. 24, 1945, during World War II. He achieved the rank of Boatswain's Mate, Second Class. He was a member of VFW Post 3838 and American Legion Post 63. He also was a member of Hanover Lutheran Church.
He had worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for 38 years as a survey boat operator.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Raymond Bendel of Hamlin, Ky.; a daughter, Carolyn Wood of Pearland, Texas; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and a granddaughter.
Visitation will be today from 4 to 8 p.m. at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home.
Funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Jeffrey Sippy officiating. Burial will follow in Lorimier Cemetery. Graveside rites will be conducted by VFW Post 3838.
