Florence Amy James, 81, of Cape Girardeau died Thursday, July 16, 2015, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
She was born Feb. 5, 1934, in Cape Girardeau to Arthur R. and Bessie Mae (Johnson) Ross.
She and Bill James were married Saturday, May 26, 1956, at Cape Girardeau. He preceded her in death in 2003.
Florence was a graduate of Central High School.
In her many years, she was employed at Dr. Hugh Asley's office, Saint Francis Hospital, Superior Electric and Cape Girardeau Public Schools.
She led an active Christian life growing up at Southside Baptist Church, ministering to many through the years. She was always ready and willing to help others in need.
In 1959, she and her husband Bill joined 27 people in eight families to start a church on the north side of town which was named Third Baptist Church. Many years later, it became Lynwood Baptist Church.
Florence and Bill went back to Southside Baptist Church after a few years, where she has been an active and loving member ever since.
She always was recognized for her ready smile and never seemed to meet a stranger.
She has always been a devoted wife and loving mother in her 81 years.
Survivors include a daughter, Twylla Rene' James of Cape Girardeau, and a brother, Thomas Ross of Cape Girardeau.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and two brothers.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Ford and Sons Sprigg Street Chapel in Cape Girardeau.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Ford and Sons Sprigg Street Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau, with the Rev. Bill Joyce officiating.
Burial will be at Cape County Memorial Park in Cape Girardeau.
Memorial contributions may be given to American Diabetes Association.
