JACKSON -- Ernst Adam Hoffmann, 91, of Jackson died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000, at Southeast Missouri Hospital.

He was born Sept. 10, 1908, at Jackson, son of Otto Leopold Hoffmann and Sophie Reimann Hoffmann. He and Lula Menita Hollmann were married Dec. 20, 1935.

He graduated from Jackson High School in 1926 and then from Central Wesleyan College in Warrenton in 1930. He participated in basketball and track during high school and college, setting several state records in pole vault and hurdles.

He was a member of Emanuel United Church of Christ and served as a member and president of the church council. He was a member of the city Park Board for 20 years and had served as chairman. He was a member of the American Legion. He was also a member of the SEMO Booster Club and the Copper Dome Society.

He had worked as a coach and registrar at Central Wesleyan College for three years then at International Shoe Factory. He was a payroll clerk in the business office at Southeast Missouri State University for 10 years, retiring in 1974.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1943-45. He was a staff sergeant in field artillery in the European theatre from 1944-45.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Paul H. Hoffmann of Jackson; and two grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and a sister.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the chapel, with the Rev. Sam Roethemeyer officiating. Burial will be in Russell Heights Cemetery.
