Elmer Sylvester Abernathy, 90, 1505 Bessie, died Monday, May 31, 1993, at Chateau Girardeau Health Care Center.
He was born Aug. 15, 1902, in Cape Girardeau, son of Ora Sylvester and Alvina Ude Abernathy. He and Alene Tooke were married Nov. 22, 1927, in Mounds, Ill. She died Dec. 19, 1991.
Abernathy worked at International Shoe Co. more than 50 years, and played on the Capaha Baseball team. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, and a past trustee and committeeman. He was active in Boy Scout Troop 2 at the church, and received the Silver Beaver award.
Survivors include a son, Thomas Abernathy of St. Louis; a daughter, Carolyn Goodin of Cape Girardeau; six grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three sisters.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Grace Church. The Rev. Ernest Swartz will officiate, with burial in Memorial Park.
Friends may call at Ford and Sons Mt. Auburn Chapel from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday.
