CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Elmer Andrew Cannon, 84, of Chaffee died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. He was born Dec. 2, 1916, in St. Louis, son of Carl and Ruby Skinner Cannon. He and Ethel Louise Jeffries were married May 4, 1935, in Jackson, Mo. She survives...

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Elmer Andrew Cannon, 84, of Chaffee died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.

He was born Dec. 2, 1916, in St. Louis, son of Carl and Ruby Skinner Cannon. He and Ethel Louise Jeffries were married May 4, 1935, in Jackson, Mo. She survives.

Also surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Royce and Sandy Cannon of San Antonio, Texas, William and Donna Smith Cannon of Chaffee, Timothy and Brenda Cannon of Barnhart, Mo.; three sisters, Mary Katherine Morris of Swansboro, N.C., Thelma Cannon Teller of Taft, Texas, Marjorie Cannon Nelson of Taft.

Eight grandchildren, Karen Cannon Brown of Springfield, Mo., Kathi Cannon Stone and Tim, Christopher Cannon and Pamela of Cape Girardeau, Wade Cannon of Chaffee, Denise Saunders of San Antonio, Lisa Borrero and Andre of Japan, Jennifer Cantu and James of San Antonio, Lisa Jean Cannon of Barnhart; and a stepgrandson, David Ivester II of Chaffee.

Also surviving are 13 great-grandchildren, Kori Brown Skidmore of Springfield, Kari and Alex Stone, Caitlin, Madison and McKenzie Cannon of Cape Girardeau, Ashley and Aaron Saunders, Brandon and Ryan Cantu of San Antonio, Brittany, Sara and Kaitlyn Borrero of Japan, a great-stepgrandson, David Ivester III of Chaffee; and a great-great-grandson, Travis Skidmore of Springfield.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Louie Cannon; two sisters, Lillian Cannon of Chaffee, and Dorothy Larsen of Canyon Lake, Texas.

Cannon spent his school years in Chaffee, graduating from Chaffee High School in 1934.

He was a machinist 45 years in the St. Louis area, retiring after 35 years with Ramsey Corp. After retiring he and Ethel moved back to Chaffee and most of his time was devoted to his love of golf. He was honored for his golf achievements with a plaque from Jaycee Noon Golf Club of Cape Girardeau in July 2000.

Cannon was baptized at First Baptist Church of Chaffee, and had attended various Baptist churches in the Anderson, Warrenton and Ballwin, Mo., areas. He was a member of Jaycee Noon Golf Club and Chaffee Historical Society.

He was a loving father, grandfather, father-in-law. His favorite pastime outside of golf was teaching his grandchildren the patience of working with precision machinery and how important it was to learn something new every day.

Friends may call at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Chaffee after 4 p.m. today.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the chapel, with the Rev. Vyron Yount officiating, assisted by the Rev. Watis Harrell. Burial will be in Union Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Chaffee Historical Society.
