Edwin Dean White Jr., beloved father and grandfather, joined the Lord on Friday, July 28, 2023, at the age of 97.
At the age of 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy to be of service during World War II. He then obtained a bachelor's degree in journalism and a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from the University of Missouri. Ed embarked on a successful career in journalism following graduation. He worked as a radio and television journalist for several years and became one of the first television anchors for the NBC affiliate in Memphis, Tennessee.
He went on to work in advertising and public relations, serving as international advertising manager for the National Cotton Council, public relations manager for Conoco and president and CEO of Ward Archer and Associates in Memphis. His success was recognized by Who's Who in Advertising, naming him a leading advertising executive.
Upon retiring from advertising, he moved from Memphis to Cape Girardeau in 1981 to serve as president of his family-owned business, Delouri Farms Inc. As president, he managed the diversification of agricultural holdings to include natural gas production and urban real estate.
Ed exercised a strong belief in community service by sharing his talent and experience with numerous agencies and boards. As a licensed aviation pilot, he volunteered with the Auxiliary of the Air Force assisting in search and rescue for greater Memphis. Of great importance to him was his service to Chateau Girardeau. He served as president of Chateau Girardeau Foundation, president of Chateau Residence Council and member of the Board of Directors for three terms.
Ed leaves many loved ones, including his dear friend and companion, Patty Mauldin. He is also survived by three children, Katie (Tom) Hamm of Phoenix, Dean (Lisa) White of Cape Girardeau and Leigh (Ed) Marks of Gulf Shores, Alabama. He was the cherished "Popa" of nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, William Andrew White, and granddaughters, Ashley Shaw and Lacey White.
He was also preceded in death by his loving wife, Fannie, of 62 years.
Ed's family would like to express tremendous gratitude to the staff of Chateau Girardeau for the outstanding care provided to him.
A memorial service celebrating Ed's life will be held in the coming weeks and details will be provided soon.
