EDWIN J. LAYTON

PERRYVILLE -- Edwin J. Layton, 96, of Perryville, died Thursday, Oct. 1, 1992, in Perryville.

He was born Jan. 21, 1896, in Perry County, son of Joseph and Mary Nesslein Layton. He married Alice Lukefahr in 1922, who died Nov. 15, 1963. He later married Lois Batjer Gahan in February 1966.

Layton had been secretary and manager at Perry County Savings and Loan, and served as mayor of Perryville. He was a member of St. Vincent's Catholic Church, Lions Club, American Legion Post 133, and was a 3rd Degree with Knights of Columbus. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I.

Survivors include his wife; a son, John Gahan of Albany, Vt.; a daughter, Jane Ruhmkorff of Cincinnati, Ohio; a sister, Bernice Stuart of Ohio; seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by 11 brothers and sisters.

Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Vincent's Catholic Church. The Rev. Edward Wilson will officiate, with burial in Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Friends may call at Young and Sons Funeral Home from 3-9 p.m. Sunday, and 6:30-9:45 a.m. Monday. The parish wake will be at 7 p.m. Sunday.
