SIKESTON, Mo. -- Edward Sweet, 84, of Sikeston died Thursday, Dec. 16, 2004, at Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston. He was born March 29, 1920, in Hardin, Ky., son of H.D. and Jewel Wells Sweet. He married Bertha Heckert Oct. 11, 1941. He lived in Mississippi and Scott counties his entire life and was employed with the Bertrand cotton gin for 28 years. He was owner and operator of Sweets Trucking Co. until he retired in 1980...

SIKESTON, Mo. -- Edward Sweet, 84, of Sikeston died Thursday, Dec. 16, 2004, at Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston.

He was born March 29, 1920, in Hardin, Ky., son of H.D. and Jewel Wells Sweet. He married Bertha Heckert Oct. 11, 1941.

He lived in Mississippi and Scott counties his entire life and was employed with the Bertrand cotton gin for 28 years. He was owner and operator of Sweets Trucking Co. until he retired in 1980.

He was in the U.S. Army's first deportment in the invasion on Normandy Beach in World War II. He was a member of Sikeston VFW Post 3174.

Survivors include a son, James Edward Sweet of Kansas City, Kan.; a daughter, Sharron Ann Smith of Miner, Mo.; two sisters, Nadine Grooms of Festus, Mo., and Virginia Jane Pulliam of Elsberry, Mo.; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston, Mo. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday with the Rev. Bill Meeks officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sikeston.

Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Missouri Military Funeral Honor Guard.
