PERRYVILLE -- Edward Allen Hartel, 72, of Perryville died Saturday, Aug. 28, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
He was born Nov. 10, 1926, in LaSalle, Ill., son of Edward Anthony and Olivia Helen Pohlig Hartel. He and Geraldine S. "Gerry" Schlue were married July 27, 1963.
Hartel was a 1944 graduate of Jackson High School. He received a bachelor of science degree in education from Southeast Missouri State University in 1950.
During the summers in the 1950s he attended the University of Wyoming; received a master of arts degree from George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, Tenn., in 1956; and attended the University of Missouri in Columbia.
Hartel taught social studies, health, science, and was assistant coach in football, basketball and track at Portageville Public Schools from 1950-53.
He began a 27-year career at Perryville School District 32 in 1953. During that time he was football, basketball and baseball coach; taught girls and boys physical education and social studies; had been athletic director; junior high school principal; and assistant high school principal.
Hartel held office in every athletic conference in which Perryville schools competed. He held offices in the Southeast Missouri Principals Association, and was a member of Missouri State High School Activities Association Advisory Board six years.
He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Holy Name Society, Knights of Columbus Council 1263, Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree Assembly, and American Legion Post 133.
Hartel was also a member of Secondary Principals Association, Southeast Missouri Principals Association, Missouri State Principals Association, Perry County Teachers Association, and Missouri State Teachers Association.
He had served as past president and vice president for a number of local principal and athletic associations. He was a former member of National Education Association, National Secondary Principals Association, and Perryville Elks and Lions Clubs.
Hartel served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Survivors include his wife.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service will be held later.
