Edgar Henry Steffens, 83, died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 1997, at The Lutheran Home, 2825 Bloomfield Road. He was born Feb. 8, 1914, in Farrar, son of Louis and Mary Verseman Steffens. Edgar Henry Steffens, 83, died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 1997, at The Lutheran Home, 2825 Bloomfield Road.

He was born Feb. 8, 1914, in Farrar, son of Louis and Mary Verseman Steffens. On Nov. 19, 1939, he married Olga Fritsche. She died March 8, 1984. He married Mamie Abernathy on June 5, 1993, in Farrar. She survives.

He worked as a dairy farmer in Farrar for most of his life before moving to Cape Girardeau in 1993. He was active in the Mars Club and worked as a board member on the East Perry County Fair and the building committee for school in 1957.

He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church most of his life and later transferred to Hanover Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Dale Steffens of Cape Girardeau and Richard and Gary Steffens, both of Jackson; a daughter, Kathy Roth of Jackson; a brother, Vernold Steffens of Ravenden, Ark.; a half brother, Alvert Hemman of Brazeau; two sisters, Alida Roth of Frohna and Hilda Slesak of Farrar; a half sister, Oleen Saffell of Longtown; 10 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a step-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a grandson.

Visitation will be held today from 4-8 p.m. at Ford & Sons Mount Auburn Chapel. Funeral services begin at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Hanover Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Jeffrey Sippy officiating. Burial will follow at Salem Lutheran Cemetery in Farrar.
