Dr. Thomas Garfield Otto, 73, 511 Alta Vista, died Thursday, April 9, 1992, at St. Francis Medical Center. He was an orthopaedic surgeon in Cape Girardeau nearly 40 years.
He was born Dec. 11, 1918, in Milk River, Alberta, Canada, son of Thomas G. and Cora May Hotze Otto. He and Dorothy Steedman were married May 20, 1944, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
Otto graduated from the University of Alberta School of Medicine in September 1943, and served a rotating internship at University Hospital in Edmonton from 1943-44.
He served in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps in Canada, England and Northwest Europe from 1944-46. He was a resident in orthopaedic surgery at University Hospital in Edmonton from 1946-49, and an orthopaedic surgery fellow at Washington University in St. Louis from 1949-50.
Otto was licensed to practice medicine in Missouri in July 1950, and began practicing in Cape Girardeau in August that year. He was a member of the staff at Southeast Missouri Hospital and St. Francis Medical Center. Otto retired July 1, 1988.
He was certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery Jan. 26, 1952.
Otto was a fellow of American College of Surgeons; member of Centenary United Methodist Church, Cape Girardeau County Medical Society, Missouri State and American Medical Associations, Mid-Central States Orthopaedic Society, St. Louis Orthopaedic Society, and American Academy of Orthopaedic surgeons.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Dr. David Otto of Cape Girardeau, Graham Otto and Dr. Thomas Otto of St. Louis; a daughter, Mary Louise Otto of St. Louis; a brother, John Otto of Lethridge, Alberta, Canada; a sister, Margaret Rowe of Apple Valley, Calif., and 11 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Centenary Church, with the Rev. Neil Stein officiating.
Ford and Sons Mt. Auburn Chapel is in charge of arrangements. There is no visitation.
