Dr. John David Green, 68, of San Diego, formerly of Cape Girardeau, died Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, at his home.

Green was born Sept. 3, 1940, in Independence, Mo., son of Chester Ralph and Mildred Whitaker Green. He and Janed Guymon Casady were married May 11, 2008, at their home in San Diego.

Green received a bachelor of music degree from Central Methodist University, a master of music from Wichita State University and a doctor of musical arts in music education from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

He rose from the rank of instructor to full professor at Southeast Missouri State University, teaching clarinet and saxophone during a career of more than 30 years. Through the years he conducted the university's orchestra, wind ensemble and jazz band and taught music history courses. He also served as director of assessment for the then-newly created University Studies program.

Green was the principal clarinetist in the Cape Girardeau Municipal Band more than 30 years. He also played clarinet with the Paducah (Ky.) Symphony Orchestra and electric bass for the Jerry Ford Orchestra and the Bill Ewing Band, and was a member of Water Street Six, a Dixieland band.

After retiring to San Diego in 2000, he kept up his involvement in music, serving as musical director of the Crown Island Jazz Band and playing bass in the Sheriff's Band, the Melody Makers, and Lyn Christian and Rear View Mirror, alto saxophone in the Elktones Big Band and bass and reed instruments in the Wesley Palms Jazz Band. He also played cornet, trombone, tuba, oboe and recorder and was a frequent substitute for various groups in the San Diego area.

He was a member of Elks Lodge 1812.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Jason Green of North Little Rock, Ark.; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A musical wake is planned Nov. 16 in San Diego.

San Diego Cremation Services is in charge of arrangements.
