Dr. Joe Ward, 84, of Cape Girardeau died Thursday, March 15, 2001, at St. Francis Medical Center.

He was born March 12, 1917, in Poplar Bluff, Mo., son of George W. and Florence Freeman Ward. He and Billie Muir were married in June 1940 at Camdenton, Mo.

Ward had a medical practice in Lexington, Mo., 45 years. He was instrumental in establishing Lexington Hospital. He moved to Cape Girardeau four years ago from Lexington, and was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church.

He served as a medic with the U.S. Army in the South Pacific.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Jay Ward of Columbia, Mo.; a daughter, Debbie Haseltine of Memphis, Tenn.; a sister, Laura Bohnsack of Cape Girardeau; and three grandchildren.

Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Sunday at Memorial Park Cemetery in Columbia.
