Dr. James T. Bruening, 58, of Cape Girardeau died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2007, at his daughter's home in Maryville, Ill.

He was born Feb. 27, 1949, in Cape Girardeau, son of Paul H. and Thekla Sieving Bruening. He and Fay Wessel were married Aug. 3, 1973, in Denison, Iowa.

Jim was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau. He was director of Trinity Brass Choir and a member of its vocal choir. He also held several offices on the church council.

He had been a professor in the math department at Southeast Missouri State University 22 years. He was problems editor of College Math Journal, organizer of Math Field Day at Southeast 20 years, and governor of Missouri Section of Mathematical Association of America.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Aaron Bruening and wife Cristie of Greenwood, Mo.; a daughter, Sarah Stock and husband Mike of Maryville; a sister, Ruth Boehne and husband Curt of Hoyleton, Mo.; and a granddaughter, Austyn Faith Bruening of Greenwood.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Stephen Bruening; and a sister-in-law, Vivian Bruening.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Douglas C. Breite officiating. Burial will be in Lorimier Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Dr. James T. Bruening Memorial Scholarship Fund or to Trinity Lutheran School Building Fund.
