Dr. Anthony Zoffuto

Dr. Anthony Charles Zoffuto, 64, of Cape Girardeau died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2008, at Southeast Missouri Hospital.

He was born March 2, 1943, in Harrisburg, Pa., son of Charles A. and Della Vendur Zoffuto. He and LouAnn Hays were married June 27, 1970, in Meridian, Miss.

Zoffuto was a 1961 graduate of Brockway, Pa., High School, where he received the Danforth Award. He received a bachelor of science degree in biology and chemistry from St. Francis University in Loretto, Pa., and a master's in microbiology from the University of West Virginia.

He received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences in Memphis, where he received the Upjohn distinguished student award. He completed an internship and internal medicine residency at the University of Tennessee-City of Memphis Hospitals.

Zoffuto was board certified in internal medicine and addiction medicine. He practiced in Dexter, Mo., before moving to Cape Girardeau in 1978.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau where he served as a deacon and was a part of the church council. He was active in outreach programs such as foreign ministries, Christmas on the River, Operation Christmas Child, Salvation Army and Baptist Student Center.

An enthusiastic outdoorsman, Tony had many special hunting friends across the nation. He belonged to Ducks Unlimited, was a range officer of Cape Girardeau County Gun Club, NRA, Bootheel Boss Gobblers and Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.

He was also a member of Cape Girardeau Country Club, Cape Girardeau County Area Medical Society, where he received a distinguished service award, and Cape Noon Optimists.

Survivors include his wife, LouAnn Zoffuto of Cape Girardeau; his mother, Della Vendur Zoffuto of Indiana, Pa.; two sons, A. Charles (Andrea) Zoffuto of Richmond, Va., Phillip Hays Zoffuto of Midlothian, Va.; a brother, Michael (Mary) Zoffuto of Dallas; a sister, Teri Zoffuto (Mike) Sweatman of Mashpee, Mass.; two granddaughters, Julia Grace Zoffuto of Midlothian, and Isabelle Sarah Zoffuto of Richmond; several nieces and nephews; and grandnieces and grandnephews.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home.

The service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Mike Shupert officiating. Entombment will be in Cape County Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Pallbearers will be Thomas, Christopher and Daniel Sweatman, James Barker, Christian Kaplicki, Phillip and Charles Zoffuto.
