Dorothy Bowers

Dorothy A. Bowers, 78, of Cape Girardeau died Thursday, May 19, 2011, at her Saxony Lutheran duplex.

She was born Feb. 8, 1933, in Advance, Mo., to Franklin O. and Edith I. Humphrey Farrar.

She and James L. Bowers were married July 20, 1951, at Essex, Mo.

Mrs. Bowers graduated from Advance High School in 1951 and from Southeast Missouri State College in 1963. She was a speech therapist for Scott City and Chaffee schools for one year. She was an elementary school teacher with Scott City schools from 1964 to her retirement in 1992. Dorothy and her husband, James, developed a business, Bowers Art Rubber Stamps, selling their products throughout the U.S. and several foreign countries.

She was a member of Lynwood Baptist Church, Missouri State Teachers Association Tri Psi Sorority, Cape Girardeau County Democratic Women, the Southeast Missouri Council on the Arts and Cape Rock Homemakers.

Survivors include her husband, James L. Bowers of Cape Girardeau; two daughters, Barbara (Phillip) Campbell of Cape Girardeau and Kimberly Schulz of Batavia, Ohio; two grandsons, Christopher Campbell of Cape Girardeau and James Schulz of Batavia; four sisters, Jane Henrichsen, Mary Evans and Alice Ketcher, all of Cape Girardeau and Verda Minton of Katy, Texas; and a brother, Bill Farrar of Rolla, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Juanita Farrar; and a brother, Carl Farrar.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Chapel.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the chapel, with the Rev. Mark Anderson officiating.

Burial will be at Morgan Memorial Park in Advance, Mo.

Memorial contributions may be given to American Diabetes Association or the American Cancer Society.
