Retired Army Lt. Col. Donal I. Medley, 89, of Cape Girardeau died Monday, Dec. 20, 2004, at Saint Francis Medical Center. He was born Nov. 11, 1915, in Terre Haute, Ind., son of John I. and Fern Clark Medley. He and Maxine Powell were married Aug. 29, 1969, in Cape Girardeau. She died Jan. 2, 2000...

Retired Army Lt. Col. Donal I. Medley, 89, of Cape Girardeau died Monday, Dec. 20, 2004, at Saint Francis Medical Center.

He was born Nov. 11, 1915, in Terre Haute, Ind., son of John I. and Fern Clark Medley. He and Maxine Powell were married Aug. 29, 1969, in Cape Girardeau. She died Jan. 2, 2000.

Mr. Medley went to work at an early age to support his family.

He joined the Indiana National Guard prior to World War II and served in the U.S. Army for the next 27 years. He served in Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge and in the Army of Occupation after World War II. After serving in Taiwan and Korea, Don was transferred to Cape Girardeau to work with the local National Guard. He retired from the regular Army in 1962.

In Cape Girardeau Donal continued to serve others as director of the Sheltered Workshop for the handicapped on Good Hope Street. Several years later he helped open and direct the United Cerebral Palsy Center. He was a member of First Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda Campbell of Gulf Shores, Ala.; two stepsons, Lt. Col. Mark P. Wyrosdick of Toano, Va., Paul Masterson of Lafayette, La.; eight grandchildren, Kristie, Jovanna, Margaret, Mark, Mitchell, Stacy, Paul and Susan; and five great-grandchildren, Greer, Kendall, Drake, Nately and Austin.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Alice, Naomi and Elsie; a brother, John; and wives, Juanita, Fern and Maxine.

Friends may call at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. today.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Mike Shupert officiating. Entombment will be in Cape County Memorial Park Mausoleum.
