JOHNSTON, Iowa -- John David Holcomb, 53, of Johnston and formerly of Cape Girardeau, peacefully passed away Monday, May 15, 2017, at his home.
He was born Sept. 8, 1963, in Cape Girardeau to Dr. John K. and Judith Ann Hanschen Holcomb.
He attended University High School, where he was an All-Conference basketball player and avidly involved in the student body.
David went on to graduate from Southeast Missouri State University with a degree in marketing management.
During his time at Southeast, he was a proud fraternity brother of Pi Kappa Alpha and participated in various intramural sports.
In his professional life, he was acknowledged as a businessman, owning Subways, selling cars and managing various businesses.
He was known as a man who loved telling stories, cracking jokes, nature, rock 'n' roll and country music, fast cars, history and Cardinals baseball. He was an avid church attendee and Lions Club member. His interests included playing golf and collecting antiques. He also enjoyed fishing at Montauk State Park and the Boundary Waters, cooking and spending time on the tractor.
His greatest joy was time spent with his children and family.
He is survived by a daughter, Katelyn Holcomb, and a son, Clayton Holcomb, both of Johnston; his mother, Judith Ann Hanschen Holcomb of Cape Girardeau; a brother, Doug (Jeri) Holcomb, and a sister, Lisa Cameron, both of Cape Girardeau; two nieces, Amber Holcomb and Amanda Cameron; two nephews, Joshua Holcomb and Chase Silvers; and a great-nephew and -niece.
He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. John K. Holcomb.
Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau. A memorial service will follow the visitation. A private burial will be held at the Holcomb Family Cemetery.
Memorials can be made to Nell Holcomb R4 School District Foundation or St. Andrew Lutheran Church and will be accepted at the church.
