Curtis Empson Brewer, 92, of DeSoto died Thursday, Sept. 4, 1997, at DeSoto Nursing Center.

He was born Oct. 31, 1904, in Uniontown, Ind., son of William Curtis and Florence Empson Brewer. He married Helen Louise Barney Aug. 15, 1928, in Cape Girardeau. She died in 1983.

Brewer was a 1922 graduate of Morehouse High School, received a bachelor of science degree in education from Southeast Missouri State University, and received a master of arts degree from the University of Missouri in 1934.

He began his career in 1923 at Gerald, where he was superintendent and taught all the high school subjects. He then moved to Canalou, and later served as superintendent at schools in Scott City, Ironton, Park Hills, and DeSoto.

Brewer retired from DeSoto schools in 1968, and less than a year later became assistant superintendent in charge of business operations at Fox C-6 Schools in Arnold.

He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in DeSoto and DeSoto Rotary Club.

Survivors include a daughter, Anne Steele of St. Ann; a son, William Brewer of Ventura, Calif.; a brother, Donald Brewer of Oklahoma City, Okla.; a sister, Dorothy Fichtel of Nashville, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Oct. 18 at Dietrich-Mothershead Chapel in DeSoto. The Revs. Clifford Smart and Chandler Crawford will officiate.
