MCCLURE, Ill. -- Born Oct. 30, 1935, at the Colyer home in McClure, he was a son and youngest child of John and Lena Mainer Colyer.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, John Lee Colyer; four sisters, Margarie Colyer, Lawana Burchyett, Mary C. Abercrombie, and Eugenia Hale.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Shirley Franklin Colyer, married May 12, 1956, in McClure; a son, Jeffrey Colyer and daughter-in-law Laila Colyer of Cape Girardeau; a daughter, Beth Ann Colyer of Cape Girardeau; a grandson, Jeremy Colyer; a granddaughter, Jessica Colyer; and sisters, Lena Hill of Cape Girardeau, Reva Kaufman of Pekin, Ill., Joann Toler of Cape Girardeau; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was a 1954 graduate of Shawnee High School, attended Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, and was a member of ROTC.
He worked with his father at Colyer Farms in McClure and Thebes, until his employment at Trojan Powder Plant as a quality control inspector, later serving as plant manager. He was later employed with and retired from Illinois Department of Transportation Dec. 31, 2002.
He enjoyed being with his family, softball, football, horseback riding and hunting.
Visitation will be today from 4 to 8 p.m. at Ford and Sons Sprigg Street Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.
The funeral will be Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Raymond Oxford officiating. Burial will be in Lindsey Cemetery at McClure.
