JACKSON -- Clark Hovis, 89, of Jackson died Wednesday, April 22, 1998, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. He was born Nov. 10, 1908, at Buckhorn, son of William R. and Mary C. Shetley Hovis. He and Ruby I. Pope were married Aug. 30, 1932. She died June 29, 1992...

JACKSON -- Clark Hovis, 89, of Jackson died Wednesday, April 22, 1998, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.

He was born Nov. 10, 1908, at Buckhorn, son of William R. and Mary C. Shetley Hovis. He and Ruby I. Pope were married Aug. 30, 1932. She died June 29, 1992.

Hovis attended the former Will Mayfield College in Marble Hill. He moved to Jackson in 1936 and worked at Kroger and Roziers Dry Goods. He also worked in other Kroger stores in Southeast Missouri. He moved to St. Louis in 1965 and worked at Famous-Barr until retiring in 1972.

He returned to Jackson in 1994. He was a member of Shawnee Hills Baptist Church and Excelsior Lodge 441 AF&AM.

Survivors include four sons, Gene Hovis of Dayton, Ohio, Don Hovis of Houston, Texas, Ron Hovis of Charlotte, N.C., Layne Hovis of Festus; four daughters, Betty Looney of Arnold, Kathryn Rhodes of St. Louis, Carol McLard of Jackson, Sharon Connell of Piedmont; 21 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

Friends may call at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson from 4-8 p.m. today, and Saturday at Shawnee Hills Church after 10 a.m.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Revs. Larry Danielly and Jeff Militti officiating. Burial will be in Russell Heights Cemetery.
