GREENBRIER -- Charles Leland Whitehead, 71, of Cottage Hills, Ill., died Tuesday, May 26, 1998, at St. Anthony's Health Center in Alton, Ill.
He was born Aug. 30, 1926, at Greenbrier, son of Henry and Bertha Borders Whitehead. He and Lawanda Love were married April 30, 1976, in Edwardsville, Ill.
Whitehead was a self-employed auto mechanic, and an automatic pin spotter mechanic at Airport Plaza Bowl in Bethalto, Ill.
He attended Gateway Worship Center Bethalto Assembly of God Church. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Terry Whitehead of Madison, Ala.; two stepdaughters, Deborah Brewton of Penrose, Colo., Tina Tinsley of Cottage Hills; a brother, Homer Whitehead; five sisters, Oma Whitehead, Erma Ladd, Grace Eaton, Thelma Ladd, Laverna Garner; a grandson; three great-grandchildren; and four stepgrandchildren.
Friends may call at Gray Funeral Home in Wood River, Ill., from 5-8 p.m. today.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Greenbrier Assembly of God Church, with the Rev. James Johns officiating. Burial will be in Balch Church Cemetery at Greenbrier.
