CHARLESTON - Charleston resident Charles W. Fowlkes died Monday, Nov. 11, 1991 at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. He was 69. He was born May 22, 1922 in Charleston to the late Robert L. and Della C. Chamberlain Fowlkes. He lived in Charleston most of his life. Fowlkes graduated from Charleston High School, where he worked as a teacher, and the University of Missouri at Columbia in 1948 with a degree in electrical engineering. CHARLESTON - Charleston resident Charles W. Fowlkes died Monday, Nov. 11, 1991 at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. He was 69.

He was born May 22, 1922 in Charleston to the late Robert L. and Della C. Chamberlain Fowlkes.

He lived in Charleston most of his life. Fowlkes graduated from Charleston High School, where he worked as a teacher, and the University of Missouri at Columbia in 1948 with a degree in electrical engineering. He served in the Navy during World War II.

Fowlkes taught at the high school in the mathematics and science departments from 1966 to 1987, when he retired. On June 7, 1947 he married Helen Young, who survives.

Fowlkes was a member of the Beta Kappa Nu fraternity; a member of the SEMO Council of the Teachers of Mathematics, for which he served as a past president, and the Missouri and national councils of the Teachers of Mathematics; a 36-year member of the Charleston Kiwanis Club, for which he served as past president, vice president, and was currently serving as secretary-treasurer; and a life-long member of the United Methodist Church in Charleston.

Also surviving are sons Robert Fowlkes of Los Angeles, Calif. and Wayne Fowlkes of Sikeston; a daughter, Virginia Fowlkes Schlitt of Charleston; a brother, John Fowlkes of Caruthersville; and four grandchildren.

Preceding Fowlkes in death were a daughter and a brother.

Friends may call after 5 p.m. today at McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston. Funeral service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church.

The Revs. Richard Combs, pastor at United Methodist, and Robert Burke of Charleston will officiate.

Burial will follow at IOOF Cemetery in Charleston.
