CAIRO, Ill. -- Charles N. Smith, 75, of Paducah, Ky., died Wednesday, March 12, 1997, at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville, Tenn. CAIRO, Ill. -- Charles N. Smith, 75, of Paducah, Ky., died Wednesday, March 12, 1997, at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville, Tenn.

He was born Nov. 12, 1921, at Cache, son of Fred and Marie Foster Smith.

Smith was a former police officer with Cairo Police Department and Cairo Auxiliary Police. He was a driver 30 years with J.D. Street Co.

He was a member of Teamsters Union, Illinois Sheriffs Association, VFW Post 2649, Masonic Lodge 237 AF&AM, and Cairo Chapter 71 Royal Arch Masons. He was a 32nd Degree member of Scottish Rite of the Valley of Southern Illinois, and York Rite Mason of Commandery Pilgrim 100 Metropolis Knights Templar.

Survivors include his wife, Minnie; a daughter, Linda Myrick of Calvert City, Ky.; a sister, Gladys Crider of Bloomington; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Barkett Funeral Home in Cairo, with Dr. Larry L. Potts officiating. Burial will be in Green Lawn Memorial Gardens at Villa Ridge.

Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday from 11 a.m. to service time.
