SIKESTON -- Charles F. Gwaltney Sr., 88, of Union City, Ga., died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at Christian City Convalescent Center in Union City.
He was born Nov. 29, 1910, in Sikeston, son of Joseph Monroe and Emma Cordelia Arnold Gwaltney. He and Mary Belle Jacobs were married June 8, 1934, in Sikeston. She died Feb. 8, 1994.
Gwaltney worked at International Shoe Co. in Sikeston 44 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Sikeston, served as a deacon, men's Bible class teacher, and served on various organizations and committees.
Survivors include a son, the Rev. Charles Gwaltney Jr. of Athens, Texas; a daughter, Janet Gwaltney of East Point, Ga.; a brother, Fred Gwaltney of Sikeston; a sister, Virginia Miles of Seabrook Island, S.C.; three grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.
Friends may call at Nunnelee Funeral Chapel from 5-8 p.m. Sunday.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the chapel. The Rev. Charles Gwaltney and Dr. Jim Guffie will officiate. Burial will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery.
