HERRIN, Ill. -- Charles Edward Tripp, 79, of Herrin, died Friday, Sept. 9, 1994 at his home. He was born Oct. 31, 1914 in Jonesboro, Ill., the son of Edward and Martha (Meisenheimer) Tripp. On Aug. 12, 1939 he married Eva Kaleta in Ziegler, Ill., and she died on Sept. 5, 1989...

HERRIN, Ill. -- Charles Edward Tripp, 79, of Herrin, died Friday, Sept. 9, 1994 at his home. He was born Oct. 31, 1914 in Jonesboro, Ill., the son of Edward and Martha (Meisenheimer) Tripp.

On Aug. 12, 1939 he married Eva Kaleta in Ziegler, Ill., and she died on Sept. 5, 1989.

Survivors include: One son, Dr. John Tripp of Cape Girardeau; two daughters, Sharon Fear of Longwood, Fla. and Martha Story of Belleville, Ill.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters.

Tripp was a retired chemistry and physics teacher, having taught at Illinois high schools in Herrin, Ziegler, St. Joseph and Aurora. He retired in 1972 as a professor of chemistry at Sauk Valley Community College in Dixon, Ill.

He was a scientist on the Manhattan Project which produced the Atomic Bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan during World War II, and had received the Atomic Bomb Medal and a citation from Secretary of War Stinson.

Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. today at the Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home in Herrin. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, with Rev. Ron Henwood officiating. Burial will be in the Herrin City Cemetery.
