PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- Charles Wesley Berry, 94, of Perryville died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2015, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
He was born Dec. 15, 1920, in Anniston, Missouri, the son of Jesse Ray and Nellie Belle Hooker Berry. He and Shirley Jean Hoehn were married Aug. 10, 1952. She survives in Perryville.
He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, VFW Post 4282 and American Legion Post 133.
He served his country in World War II and beyond. He served in the Pacific in 1945 during the Ryukyus Campaign; in Germany in 1949 during the Berlin Air Lift; Tripoli, Libya; twice in Morocco; and Spain in 1964, returning to the United States for retirement. His military career began in the infantry, then switched to the Army Air Corps that later became the U.S. Air Force.
He retired from the Air Force on June 30, 1964, and then went to work food-service management jobs in the Omaha, Nebraska-Council Bluffs, Iowa, area. This included the Omaha YMCA, nursing homes, College of St. Mary and the Iowa prison system. At the end of 1981, he retired a second time and moved to Perryville.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Orville, Frank and George Berry; and four sisters, Roxie Berry, Robbie Zieba, Opal Wilburn and Ida May Farley.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 6:30 a.m. until time of service Monday at Young and Sons Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Thomas Handrick officiating. Burial will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, with military graveside honors provided by American Legion Post 133 and the Missouri Honors Team.
Memorials are preferred to Immanuel Lutheran Church or its school building fund.
