NEW MADRID, Mo. -- Carlan Stone Femmer, 85, a lifelong resident of New Madrid, passed away Friday, May 25, 2007, at Golden Living Center in New Madrid.
She was born Jan. 14, 1922, in Cape Girardeau, daughter of E.B. and Lillian Stone. She and Bert Femmer were married July 30, 1943, in Blytheville, Ark. He preceded her in death Sept. 21, 2000.
Mrs. Femmer worked in the New Madrid County School District 38 years as a teacher and counselor before retiring in 1987. She received a bachelor of science degree in education from Southeast Missouri State University in 1961, and a master's from the University of Missouri through Southeast in 1967.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in New Madrid, Friendship Quilters Association, New Madrid Country Club, New Madrid Eagles Ladies Auxiliary 4206, Red Hat Society, and was a past member of Order of Eastern Star. She attended President Harry Truman's Inaugural Ball.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Fredi and Carl Holyfield of Hermitage, Tenn., Carol and Steve Frank of McKinney, Texas; a granddaughter and husband, Leslie and Jeff Welsh of Abilene, Kan.; and three great-grandsons, Jackson, Javin and Joseph.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Terry Femmer; a brother, Jerome Stone; and a niece, Irene Stone.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. today at Richards Funeral Home in New Madrid, with the Rev. Jack Ketcher officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in New Madrid.
