LOWNDES, Mo. -- Calvin R. Scowden, 94, of Lowndes passed away Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 8, 2019, surrounded by his family.

Born June 20, 1925, he was the son of the late Byron Leslie and Mary Ann Katherine Houseman Scowden.

Calvin graduated from Greenville High School in 1943.

A decorated veteran, he served in the Army from September 1943 to January 1946. He was a rifleman with the 349th Infantry Regiment, part of the legendary 88th Infantry, and was awarded, among many other medals, three Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart.

A graduate of Southeast Missouri State University, Calvin taught in Wayne County, Missouri, school districts for 42 years, where he made countless lifelong friends. He ran a successful cattle farm in his beloved Lowndes and served as a clerk at various area livestock auctions. Calvin was a devoted fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. He was of the General Baptist faith and a member of Corinth Baptist Church in Lowndes.

Calvin is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 73 years, Wilma Jane Ward Scowden; daughters, Barbara Scowden (Dan) Alexander of Malden, Missouri, Tricia Scowden (Glenn) Burkett of Jackson and Cathryn Scowden (Doyle) Bruce of Benton, Missouri; grandchildren, Dana Cook of Bernie, Missouri, Scott Burkett of Jackson, Darrick Bruce of Scott City, Ryan Burkett of Chicago, Anitra Bahner of Jackson and Blaine Bruce of Jackson; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Calvin was a loving role-model to all. He is also survived by his brother, Don (Linda) Scowden of Greenville.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Leo Scowden.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Morrison Funeral Chapel in Greenville.

Funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Leeman Shirrell officiating. Burial, with military honors, will be at Corinth Church Cemetery in Lowndes.
