Buford Charles Filer, age 72, of Jackson, went to be with the Lord on June 3, 2000, after an extended illness. Buford Charles Filer, age 72, of Jackson, went to be with the Lord on June 3, 2000, after an extended illness. Mr. Filer was born Dec. 20, 1927, to the late Charles and Stella Patton Filer of Marble Hill. He and Alice Hansen (daughter of Lee and Geneva Winchester Hansen) were married in Marble Hill on Sept. 30, 1949.

Buford Filer was a well-known Chrysler, GM and Ford/Lincoln/Mercury dealer in the area. He established new car dealerships in Missouri, Illinois and Tennessee. He retired due to failing health.

While in the business world, Mr. Filer was a member of the Rotary Club, IOOF, Jaycees, Moose Lodge and Eagles Lodge. He was an active member of the We Can Weekend cancer support group and served on the Pennies from Heaven Auction committee. He served in the Navy at the end of World War II. He attended First General Baptist Church in Jackson.

Mr. Filer is survived by his wife, Alice; daughter Linda Kay Lucero, son-in-law, David Lucero of Denver, Colo.; daughter, Judy Ann McCullough, son-in-law, Roger McCullough of Denver, Colo.; Carol Sue Reddick, son-in-law, Richard Reddick of Cape Girardeau; daughter-in-law, Mary Jo Combs Filer of Jackson.

He was preceded in death by his son, John Michael Filer.

He is survived by five grandchildren, Tyson Brugger, Joseph Filer, Katie Filer and twin granddaughters, Allison (Ali) and Rebecca (Becky) Filer. Four stepgrandchildren and two great-stepgrandchildren; two sisters, Wanda Stockman and husband Dave Stockman; Wilda Stieferman and husband Orville Stieferman of Jefferson City.

Buford was a devoted son, brother, husband, father and grandfather who spent his life giving his time and talents to his family and friends.

Pallbearers will be Richard Allgood, Tyson Brugger, Vance Combs, Bill Cook, David Lucero and Guilio Venezian. Honorary pallbearers are J.W. Baker, Don Illers, Ken Galloway, Carson Loafman, Richard McClain, Roy McClain, Harold Meyr and Ken Torbet.

Visitation will be Monday, June 5 from 4-8 p.m. at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson. Services will be conducted Tuesday, June 6 at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Barry Winders, at the funeral home. Eulogy will be given by the Honorable Judge Kenneth Shrum. Burial will follow at Russell Heights Cemetery.

Memorials honoring Mr. Filer may be made to the Cancer Support Group of Southeast Missouri Hospital, Barnard Cancer Center, First General Baptist Church or Southeast Hospice.
