Bobby Gene Bess, 69, of Cape Girardeau passed away peacefully Monday, April 6, 2020, at the home of his beloved friends, Jimmy and Becky Baylor, who were his family in thought, words and deed.
He was born in Ripley County, Missouri, on Nov. 18, 1950, to Shirley Medlock Bess.
Bobby was a 1968 graduate of Cape Girardeau Central High School. It was said he had run track and had a record that hasn't been beaten. He learned how to run and jump fences as a small boy out of necessity.
He worked at Superior Electric until it closed and retired after 20-plus years with Cape Girardeau Public Works.
He was a member of the Eagles and had played softball for the Misfits, Brown Bombers, Brown Shoes and Bob's Shoes teams. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping with his buddies, Ike, Robin, J.D., Kenny, Gilbert and so many others. You all know who you are. He had another good buddy called "Pop-cycle." You all remember Pop-cycle!
Bobby never married, but he did have a few "significant others" over his lifetime. His best companion was Budweiser and of course there was "Bud." When he had one, he always had the other. He was a companion on so many vacations to Panama City, Florida, Gatlinburg, Tennessee, Gettysburg, Virginia, Boston, Niagara Falls, New York, and many others. Bobby and Jimmy went on their last trip together to Fort Collins, Colorado, in September 2018.
He was "Uncle Bobby" to Leslie, Sara, Tray, Jordan, C.J., Hunter, Alyssa and so many others. It costs too much to name all of the kids. Bobby was a tight as a tick on a dog! He will be laid to rest with his brothers, Jackie and Jerry, and his sisters, Brenda and Carol.
He leaves behind a niece and nephews here in the U.S.A.
Bobby was passionate about donating to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital every month. He wanted folks to donate St. Jude's, if they want, as there will not be a funeral as per his wishes. He wasn't into flowers except for the flower bed in his yard.
Bobby was such a kind soul and a humble man. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him. He knew Jesus was his Lord and Savior, and that's where he is now. That comforts his family and his friends.
Liley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
