Billy Jerome Proffer, 81, of Jackson, passed away Sunday, Aug. 1, 2021, at his home.
He was born Nov. 10, 1939, in Crump, the son of Otis and Mary Ellen Ervin Proffer. He married Loretta Sticht on May 1, 1986.
Billy worked for the City of Jackson from 1970 to 2002. He started with the Sanitation Department and had worked the last several years at City Hall. He and his wife also operated a janitorial service cleaning the Southwestern Bell Telephone building in Cape Girardeau and the Jackson Elks Club in Jackson for many years.
He attended Connection Point Church in Jackson and was a 40-year member of the Jackson Elks Club.
Loving survivors include his wife, Loretta; four stepchildren, Tommy Sticht of St. Clair, Missouri; Dewanna (Kevin) Brown of Burfordville; J (Chasady) Stortz of Whitewater; and Denny Stortz of St. Charles; seven stepgrandchildren and several great-stepgrandchildren. Also surviving are four brothers, Bob (Norma), Ben (Helen), Bernard (Alice) and Bryan Keith (Barb) Proffer, all of Jackson; and three sisters, Brenda and Barbara Proffer, both of Jackson, and Diane (Joel) Erickson of Spanish Fork, Utah.
Billy was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Bradley Proffer Sr., and a sister, Betty Proffer.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Christ Vaught officiating. Burial will follow in Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson.
Memorials may take the form of contributions to the Jackson Senior Center.
