ALTON, Ill. -- William R. "Bill" Klein, 70, of Alton died Tuesday, July 8, 1997, at his home. He was born Aug. 8, 1926, in Cairo, the son of George J. and Doris Bucher Klein. He worked as a field auditor for the Internal Revenue Service from 1957 to 1960, then accepted a position as a systems analyst at the Olin Corp. in Alton. He retired in May 1990. While retired, he worked part-time at the former Sears Paint and Hardware store in Alton...

ALTON, Ill. -- William R. "Bill" Klein, 70, of Alton died Tuesday, July 8, 1997, at his home.

He was born Aug. 8, 1926, in Cairo, the son of George J. and Doris Bucher Klein.

He worked as a field auditor for the Internal Revenue Service from 1957 to 1960, then accepted a position as a systems analyst at the Olin Corp. in Alton. He retired in May 1990. While retired, he worked part-time at the former Sears Paint and Hardware store in Alton.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946, then enlisted in the National Guard. He was activated for the Korean War in 1952, and was honorably discharged as a sergeant first class.

He was a past president of the PTA at East Junior High School in Alton and the Alton Band and Orchestra Builders. He was active in the former Alton YMCA assisting with the Indian Guide Longhouse projects.

Survivors are his wife, Jean S. Klein of Alton; two sons, Russell Klein of DuQuoin and Robert S. "Steve" Klein of Godfrey; a daughter, Elisabeth A. Emblom of Alexandria, Va.; four brothers, George Klein of Prescott, Ariz., Howard Klein of Austin, Texas, and Edwin and Karl Klein, both of Cairo; two sisters, Karolyn Carr and Marian Hurley, both of Mounds; and five grandchildren.

A brother preceded him in death.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Fine and Quinn Chapel of Alton where a prayer service will be held at 4.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Church in Alton, with the Rev. Dan Barron officiating. Burial will be at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
