Betty Sue Hopen, 89, of Cape Girardeau passed away Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014, at Chateau Girardeau.
Mrs. Hopen was born June 15, 1925, in Jefferson City, Missouri, to Roy C. and Faye C. Shelton Johnson. On Oct. 10, 1944, she was married to James J. Hopen in Jefferson City. He passed away Sept. 5, 1993.
She loved to travel, and for many years she volunteered at Saint Francis Medical Center and as a tour guide at Old St. Vincent Catholic Church. She had been a member of AARP group, Mission Club, Birthday Club and Cape County Republican Women. Mrs. Hopen was involved in the preservation and renovation of old St. Vincent's Church.
She is survived by three sons, Thomas (Joy) Hopen of Lawrenceville, Georgia, Michael (Elaine) Hopen and Stephen Hopen of Cape Girardeau; three daughters, Mary (Dennis) Drum of Herndon, Virginia, Linda (Don) Shelton of Kelso, Missouri, and Carolyn (Randy) Davis of Jackson; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Barbara Hiatte of Jefferson City.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Robert Hopen; daughters, Susan Hopen Carlson and Judith Marie "Judy" Hopen; and three brothers.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau, with parish prayers at 5:30 p.m.
Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Old St. Vincent's Catholic Church in Cape Girardeau, with the Rev. Allan Saunders and the Rev. John Harth officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Cape Girardeau.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Old St. Vincent Catholic Church or Saint Francis Medical Center Auxiliary.
