Bettie I. James, 79, of Jackson passed away Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, at St. John's Mercy Hospital in St. Louis.

A private graveside service was held Sunday, Jan. 5, at Cape County Memorial Park in Cape Girardeau, with the Rev. David Johnson officiating.

McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson was in charge of arrangements.

Bettie was born May 15, 1923, in Terre Haute, Ind., daughter of Paul J. and Beulah Fowler Fisher. She married Harold F. James. He passed away July 17, 1969.

Formerly of Cape Girardeau, Bettie had lived in Jackson since 1950. From 1949 to 1970 she was secretary for the family business, Starlight Garage, at highways 34 and 72 junction west of Jackson.

She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Jackson, where she was baptized and confirmed in 1952. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Jackson.

Loving survivors include a son, Harold "Butch" James II and wife Darlene of Wildwood, Mo.; a daughter, Sandy Triplett and husband Larry of St. Louis; a sister, Ann DeLong of Tyler, Texas; and three grandchildren, Benjamin and David James and Brian Triplett.

She was preceded in death by two brothers.

In Bettie's memory, expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the St. Paul Radio Broadcast or American Heart Association.
