Bessie Jane Johnson, 90, of Cape Girardeau passed away Wednesday, June 25, 2014, at Monticello House in Jackson.
She was born May 27, 1924, in Cape Girardeau, at the family home on Bend Road, daughter of Frank and May Mullins Hopper. Bessie and Samuel Brooks Johnson were married July 25, 1946. He preceded her in death Jan. 7, 2007.
Bessie graduated from College High School in 1942. She worked at the Cape shoe factory before marriage. She was involved in the family business, Johnson's Heating and Air Conditioning. They sold the business in 1987 to enjoy retirement.
She was a lifelong member and Sunday school teacher at Hobbs Chapel United Methodist Church, and served as historian of the church a number of years. She was very active at Cape Senior Center and managed Bessie's Boutique. This was volunteer work, four hours per day for several years.
Survivors include a son, Michael Johnson (Marilyn) of Cape Girardeau; three grandchildren, Kim Bowe (Kevin) of St. Louis, Kara Johnson of Chicago and Michael Johnson of Poplar Bluff, Missouri; three great-grandchildren, Ava Grace Bowe and Jackson Nicholas Bowe of St. Louis and Liza Camryn Johnson of Essex, Missouri; two sisters, Wanda Grim and Martha Bertrand (Frank) of Cape Girardeau; a brother, Harvey Hopper of Paducah, Kentucky; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by five sisters and four brothers.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of service Saturday at Hobbs Chapel.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the church, with the Revs. Jim Norris and Rodger Rice officiating. Burial will be in Hobbs Chapel Cemetery.
