Bess H. Estes, 95, of Cape Girardeau died Friday, June 7, 1996, at the Fountainbleau Lodge.
She was born Nov. 26, 1900, in Senath, daughter of George C. and Rosalee Wallace Harris. She and Dr. Albert M. Estes were married Aug. 30, 1924, in Jackson. He died April 18, 1974.
Estes graduated from the University of Missouri with an education degree. She taught at Maplewood for one year and then spent 10 years in the Ferguson School District. She moved to Jackson in 1935 and then to Cape Girardeau in 1949.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and volunteered at St. Francis Medical Center, the American Red Cross and was a charter member of the Mid-America Teen Challenge. In 1982, she was chosen as an honorary member of the Friends of St. Francis Medical Center organization.
Survivors include a son, Albert M. Estes II of St. Louis; three sisters, Straudie Manley, Verna Cummings and Marie Berry, all of Senath; and a grandson.
She was preceded in death by a brother and sister.
Friends may call from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Monday at the Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Chapel.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Charles Dreyer officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
